statute of limitations
A statute of limitations is the legally prescribed time limit in which a lawsuit must be filed or "civil action in which affirmative relief is sought" must be brought.1 A lawsuit may not be filed after the prescribed time limit. Statutes of limitation differ depending on the type of legal claim. There are two important issues: (1) when the time period begins (the trigger), and (2) how long the time period is.
